We Wear the Mask
Hey folks! It's poetry day. This is a poem I found sometime back. This is why I love this poem; I used to be the girl who wore her heart on her sleeve. The bear it all kinda chic. I mean I didn't have to say much but my attitude told a thousand stories.
I'm learning to drop that behavior. Humans can be vile! I kid you not. People will take advantage of your vulnerability and do you in. The best thing? Smile to the world and when the time to cry comes(and oh it will come) bare your soul only to God and perhaps that one person(I say this with utmost caution) that God approves of telling your business to. It's a lovely read, enjoy
BY PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR
We wear the mask that grins and lies, It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile; With torn and bleeding hearts we smile, And mouth with myriad subtleties.
Why should the world be over-wise, In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while We wear the mask.
We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries To thee from tortured souls arise. We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile; But let the world dream otherwise, We wear the mask!
